Somatic hybrids were obtained after protoplast fusion of sexually incompatible species of L. esculentum and L. peruvianum v. dentatum. Genetic novelty of the hybrids in question was shown by study of the chromosome number, isozymes (esterase, peroxidase), a small subunit of RuBPCase and chloroplast DNAs. Somatic interspecies hybrids possess new combinations of genes which have not been obtained before.
