Abstract

A mechanism of iodination of C2 and C3 carbohydrate atoms in pyrimidine nucleosides has been studied. The iodination was established to be associated with step by step formation of intermediate quaziphosphtmic salts and with their further transformation under conditions of intramolecular nucleophilic reaction. The resulted' unstable 2',3'-diiodide was shown to be deiodinated and transformed into 2',3'-didehydro-2',3'-dideoxynucleoside.
