Genetic Transformation of Cereals: Advances and Perspectives
Summary
Methods for the genetic manipulation of cereal crops have progressed considerably in recent years. A serious limitations in the wider application of DNA-mediated direct gene transfer to cereal crops remains the difficulty of regenerating plants from isolated protoplasts. Alternative transformation methods independent of protoplasts are therefore being sought by introducing foreign genes either via microinjection into multicellular structure, or by delivering the isolated DNA directly into plants, or pollen transformation, or Agrobacterium mediated gene transfer. Most of these methods led to obtained genetically transformed cereal plants, but most suitable method in this case is delivering the isolated DNA directly into plants.
