THE EFFECT OF ESCHERICHIA COLI RIBOSOMAL PROTEIN S12 MUTATIONS ON THE EFFICIENCY OF DEOXYRIBONUCLEOTIDE MATRIX POLY(dT) TRANSLATION
Summary
The efficiency of poly(dT) translation has been studied in cell-free systems from wild-type E. coli and streptomycin-resistant mutants with altered ribosome protein S12. The data show that there is a positive correlation between poly(U) misreading and efficiency of poly(dT) translation. Mutant ribosomes translate poly (U)-template more accurately than ribosomes from wild-type bacteria and they are less efficient in translation of poly(dT) as well. The ribosome seems to select codon-anticodon pair as a whole unit. The data are in good agreement with hypothesis of stereospecific stabilization of codon-anticodon complex by the ribosome.
